Vaccination Requirements

04/09/07

For the safety of all dogs enrolled in Southern Michigan Obedience Training Club classes, the Club requires that all handlers provide evidence that their dog is properly vaccinated.

Club vaccine requirements and recommendations are listed below.   If your veterinarian adheres to a vaccine regimen that conflicts with the Club requirements, the Club will accept instead a statement signed by your veterinarian excusing your dog from the vaccine and identifying your dog as being in good health and not currently carrying a transmittable disease.

REQUIRED VACCINES

  • Puppy Class
    • Puppies must be current in their vaccine series as recommended by your veterinarian. At minimum puppies must have received at least two Distemper combination and Parvovirus vaccines.

  • All other SMOTC Classes
    • Handlers must provide evidence that their dogs are currently vaccinated for Canine Parvovirus, Distemper Virus, and Adenovirus-2, Leptospirosis, and Rabies.  These vaccines are commonly combined into a "DA2PP" or "Galaxy" vaccine. Leptospirosis is sometimes included in the combination vaccine and is sometimes given separately.  Rabies is always a separate vaccine.  Check with your veterinarian to make sure your dog is current.

RECOMMENDED VACCINES and HEALTH CHECKS

  • Puppy Class
    • Puppies should have had at least two negative intestinal parasite exams (stool sample checks).
    • If your puppy is old enough, a Canine Bordatella ("Kennel Cough") vaccine is recommended, although often young puppies have not yet reached this "stage" in their vaccine schedule as identified by your veterinarian.
    • Take your puppy for a General Health Exam. Tell your veterinarian that you will be attending a puppy class with your dog and that your puppy will be mixing and playing with 6-10 other young puppies.  Follow your veterinarian's advice regarding any health concerns.

  • All other SMOTC Classes
    • Canine Bordatella ("Kennel Cough")
    • Canine Heartworm Test (and current preventative)
    • Negative Intestinal Parasite Exam (stool sample check)
    • General Health Exam   Tell your veterinarian that you will be attending an obedience class in the presence of 15-20 other dogs.  Follow your veterinarian's advice regarding any vaccine or health concerns.

Fleas: A note for all dog owners

    • If your dog has fleas, please do not bring him/her to class.  We love to share most things, but fleas are not one of those things.  There are many safe, effective forms of flea control and prevention available today.  SMOTC strongly urges all dog owners to use ONLY flea products recommended and dispensed by your Veterinarian.  Over-the-counter, pet store, and internet products may not provide you with the result you are looking for, and worse, may cause harm to your dog or to other pets in your home in the meantime.
